AUS Sumo Robot Competition

 February 25–26, 2023 | 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Developing STEM skills in high school students is critical to their future success in higher education and the workforce. A great way to build such skills, along with a host of other 21st Century skills, is through robotics. AUS' College of Engineering (CEN) is therefore hosting an inaugural Sumo Robot Competition for high school students in grades 9 -12. If you are interested in robotics, engineering, Artificial Intelligence and want to make some new friends, this competition is for you!

Here’s how it works:

Day one:

Working in teams consisting of up to three members, you will be given a robot-building starter kit, competition rules, and a limited time-frame in which to build a small-scale sumo robot. AUS faculty will be on hand to help you maximize your robot-building potential.

Day two:

Day two will provide some time for tweaking your robot. Then the competition begins!

Your task will be to create a robot that can withstand opposing robots’ efforts to push your robot out of the sumo ring. The victorious robot will be the one that is able to push all other robots out of the ring without being eliminated.

Prizes will be awarded for those creating the most successful robots!

This event registration is now on hold. Please stay tuned for updates.

Why get involved?

There are a number of great reasons to join the Sumo Bot Competition.

Not only will you hone your STEM skills, you will also develop other skills vital to your future success at university or in the workplace, including team work and problem-solving skills.

You will also have the opportunity to make new friends with like-minded people and explore the impressive AUS campus (which you might end up attending one day).

This is also a great chance to connect with AUS' internationally renowned engineering faculty. Faculty leading the event include electrical engineering expert Associate Professor Shayok Mukhopadhyay and  CEN lab instructor Mr. Wasil El Tahir.
