The Department of Arabic and Translation Studies (ATS) in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University of Sharjah (AUS), is pleased to invite submissions for its upcoming conference on Translation Studies, themed Hyperlocal to Global: Cultural Hybridity and Translation in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The rapid development of AI technologies has revolutionized the translation industry, making it possible to achieve unprecedented levels of relative accuracy, efficiency and, of course, speed. Neural machine translation and AI-powered localization tools are examples of how technology is reshaping the way languages are being engineered. However, these advancements also imply ethical considerations, questions about the role of human translators, and the potential for bias in AI- generated translations.
The conference will provide an invaluable opportunity for scholars, researchers, practitioners, students, and industry experts to contribute to explore and exchange ideas on how AI influences the blending of the local with the global and how cultural hybridity (glocal) is represented and transmitted across various media through AI-generated translation. It will focus on the tensions, opportunities, and implications of these processes in the context of the digital era, examining the role of AI in shaping/reshaping narratives, media, languages, and cultural goods.

لا شك أن التطور السريع في تكنولوجيا الذكاء الاصطناعي قد أحدث ثورة في صناعة الترجمة، وهو ما جعل من الممكن تحقيق مستويات غير مسبوقة من الدقة والكفاءة في الأداء الترجمي، فضلاً عن السرعة في الإنجاز. وتعد الترجمة الآلية العصبية وأدوات التوطين المدعومة بالذكاء الاصطناعي أمثلة واضحة على كيفية إعادة تشكيل التكنولوجيا للطريقة التي تعمل بها الهندسة اللغوية. ومع ذلك، تثير هذه التطورات أيضًا اعتبارات أخلاقية وتساؤلات مشروعة تتعلق بدور المترجمين، وإمكانية وجود تحيزات في الترجمات المتولدة عن خوارزميات برامج الذكاء الاصطناعي ينبغي بحثها والنظر فيها.

Keynote Speaker
Professor Dorothy Kenny, Dublin City University, Ireland
Dr. Dorothy Kenny is full professor of translation studies at Dublin City University (DCU), Ireland. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in French and German from DCU and a Master of Science in Machine Translation and a PhD in Language Engineering, both from the University of Manchester, UK. Her current research interests include corpus-based analyses of translation and translator style, the relationship between artificial intelligence and literary translation, and approaches to the teaching of translation technology. Her most recent book is the open-access edited volume Machine Translation for Everyone: Empowering Users in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (Language Science Press, 2022). She is co-editor (with Joss Moorkens) of the journal Translation Spaces and an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
Since at least the 1950s, scientists have sought ways to automate translation, but for most of this time literary translation remained untouched by their efforts. The advent of data-driven machine translation—and especially neural machine translation (NMT)—changed things, however, and the sudden rise of generative AI in the guise of large language models (LLMs) in late 2022 heralded a further wave of experimentation in the automation of literary translation. Much of the commentary in the area has been cloaked in the terminology of warfare and colonialism, with literature described as “the last bastion of human translation” or “the final frontier” for automatic translation. Literary translators have unsurprisingly taken defensive positions in a bid to protect important material, aesthetic and societal values. Against this antagonistic background, there has been relatively little room for consideration of applications of AI that human literary translators might find useful, or for studies that respond to new technological affordances by asking questions that might yield new theoretical insights. In this talk, I survey recent developments in the interaction between AI— in the form of both NMT and LLMs—and literary translation, as captured in the research literature, commercial outlets and translators’ manifestos, among other sources, and ask what avenues we might pursue in future research, and why such research might be worth doing, despite the deeply problematic nature of much contemporary AI.

We invite scholars, researchers, and practitioners to submit:
- Abstract of original research relevant to the conference themes. Submissions must be in a Microsoft Word document and can be in English or in Arabic (abstracts in Arabic must be accompanied by proper English translation). Abstracts should be informative and well-structured (maximum 300 words) outlining the paper's objectives, methodology and key findings. All abstracts will be double reviewed by members of the scientific committee.
- A brief bio-sketch (no more than a 100-word) of the author(s);

Publication Opportunity | إمكانية النشر العلمي
A selection of papers will be considered for publication in a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal such as InterLingo (interlingo.org) or Dragoman Journal of Translation Studies (dragoman-journal.org) (Scopus-Indexed) or in an edited volume; usual peer review applies. Contributions can be in either English or Arabic. Further details to follow.
