Oil Spill Clean-up Challenge

Chemical and Biological Engineering – High School Competition

American University of Sharjah | College of Engineering

Sunday, October 25, 2026 | 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

This competition is open to high school students in Grades 10-12 in the UAE.

OBJECTIVES

At this informative and engaging competition, students will:

  • explore more about chemical and biological engineering

  • learn about practical skills in chemical and biological engineering

  • work collaboratively in teams

  • interact with students from other schools

  • enjoy an unforgettable campus experience at AUS

The Challenge

Design and build a prototype oil-spill cleanup material using simple, accessible, and preferably sustainable or waste materials. The challenge is inspired by the UAE's focus on environmental sustainability, resource efficiency, and resilience in coastal and marine environments.

Your team will test the prototype using a standardized oil-water mixture provided at AUS.

The goal is to achieve high oil uptake capacity while demonstrating a safe, practical, and environmentally responsible design.
