AUS Silver Jubilee Tour
Engineering and Sciences Building
The Engineering and Sciences Building (ESB) was opened in October 2019, giving AUS faculty and students even more opportunities for research and experiential learning.
The massive four-story facility houses two auditoriums, 35 teaching and research laboratories, and 24 classrooms (including smart classrooms).
Sustainably constructed
In keeping with AUS’ commitment to environmental sustainability, the Engineering and Sciences Building meets stringent environmental and sustainability standards.
Upon opening, the ESB achieved 2 Pearl ESTIDAMA Certification, in accordance with the requirements of the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council and ESTIDAMA Sustainability.
The sustainable design includes:
- All classrooms, laboratories and offices are illuminated throughout the day using natural light.
- An outdoor thermal comfort strategy is in place for the building’s surrounds, with landscaping and carefully selected planting providing shade and temperature control.
- ESB has a system for recycling condensate water from its air conditioning, reusing 1.2 liters of water per second.
- The building has a high-frequency lighting system including LED lights and occupancy sensors.
- Non-polluting, eco-friendly and recycled material is used throughout.
Advanced facilities for advanced research
Among the three PhD programs offered at AUS is the PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, which was launched in Fall 2022 under the direction of Professor Ali AlNaser (pictured above).
The program is multidisciplinary in nature and is delivered by the College of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with the College of Engineering and the College of Architecture, Art and Design.
Taking advantage of the incredible facilities housed within the ESB, the current PhD cohort is working towards research in the areas of advanced materials, materials for energy and environment, structures, and analytical and computational modeling and simulation. Learn more.
