The American University of Sharjah  Department of Arabic and Translation Studies (ATS) invites submissions for the upcoming conference on Qur’anic Studies, themed “Text, Context, and Interpretation: Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Qur’an.”

The Qur’an serves as the foundational text of the Islamic tradition, offering enduring guidance through its spiritual, legal, and ethical teachings. Complementing it is the ḥadīth literature, which preserves the sayings and practices of the Prophet Muhammad and provides essential context for interpreting the Qur’anic revelation. Contemporary scholarship increasingly highlights the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to the study of the Qur’an, drawing on fields such as theology, law, linguistics, hermeneutics, gender studies, and digital humanities.

This conference convenes a diverse group of scholars to explore the Quran in its socio-historical context, its relationship to the hadith, and the interpretive traditions or streams that evolved from the formative era to the present.

We invite researchers, graduate students, and academics from a wide range of disciplines to contribute to this vital conversation. Join us in this collaborative academic space, where scholars critically engage with the Qur’an through diverse lenses—textual, contextual, and interpretative—and re-examine its enduring significance in dialogue with the Prophetic tradition.

القرآن الكريم هو النص الأصيل والمنهل الرئيس الذي ارتكزت عليه أصول الإسلام، ولا شك أن تعاليمه وأحكامه لا تزال ترسم للعالم أجمع دروب الهداية، وتدعو آياته إلى مكارم الأخلاق. ويتكامل معه في هذه الغاية علم الحديث الشريف، الذي يوفر سياقًا جوهريًا يعين على فهم الوحي القرآني. ولم تخل فترة تاريخية من الاهتمام بدراسة هذا الكتاب من شتى جوانبه، وما زال القرآن لا يَخْلَق من كثرة الرد. وقد نشأت علوم كثيرة تهتم بمباني ألفاظه ورسمها، وتدرس لغته ومعانيه روايةً ودرايةً، وتقطف من ثمار تعاليمه وأحكامه، وتبني مذاهب في التأويل والتفسير والفلسفة. وفي الدراسات المعاصرة يظهر اهتمام واضح بالقرآن يتمثل في جانب منه في تبني مناهج تتجاوز التخصص الواحد، وتجتمع لدراسة القرآن الكريم استنادًا إلى أدوات ومقاربات بحثية متنوّعة تمزج بين العلوم الراسخة كالعقيدة، والفقه، واللسانيات، والجديد منها في دراسات النوع الاجتماعي، والعلوم الإنسانية الرقمية، والتقدم التقني.

وفي هذا السياق، يسعى المؤتمر إلى استقطاب نخبة من الأكاديميين والباحثين من مختلف الحقول المعرفية لاستكشاف أبعاد النصّ القرآني ضمن سياقاته المتعددة وتحليل بنيته ودلالاته التأويلية وتفكيك علاقته الحيوية بالحديث النبوي الشريف، فضلاً عن سبر أغوار التراث التفسيري الغني في الإسلام.

Dr. Shuruq Naguib lectures on Islam at Lancaster University, specializing in Qur’anic hermeneutics, classical Arabic rhetoric (balāgha) and gender in Islamic thought. Her work bridges classical tafsīr traditions and contemporary interpretive approaches, with a particular focus on the intellectual reception of balāgha in the post-classical period. Her study on the Ottoman exegete Ebu’s-suʿūd explores how metaphor and rhetorical analysis shaped Qur’anic interpretation in the sixteenth century. Dr Naguib is also a scholar on gender and Qur’anic interpretation. Her research highlights the contributions of women exegetes—most notably Bint al-Shāṭiʾ—and engages critically with feminist hermeneutics. Her publications include studies on menstruation and ritual purity in the Qur’an. She has advanced gender-sensitive readings that remain attentive to classical commentary while exploring contemporary questions of embodiment, language, and epistemology. She is co-author of the monograph Islam on Campus: Contested Identities and the Cultures of Higher Education in Britain (Oxford University Press, 2020), and has led major research projects, including “Muslim Women Reading Religious Texts in Britain and Egypt.” She was also co-investigator on the AHRC-funded “Representing Islam on Campus” project. Dr Naguib’s current work focuses on intersura coherence in the Qur’an and the hermeneutic function of repetition and rhetorical patterning. Across all her research, she foregrounds the interplay between textual form, interpretive tradition, and lived religious experience.
